Canada’s Parliament has introduced a new bill entitled the Combating Counterfeit Products Act. This bill amends the Copyright Act and the Trademark Act by adding new civil and criminal remedies for the possession, sale and distribution of infringing work.
How will this bill help to protect your work?
- By granting border patrol agents the right to detain copies of suspect infringing materials;
- By creating new criminal and civil offenses for commercial possession, sale and distribution of counterfeit goods
- By protecting legitimate owners giving them more power to enforce their intellectual property rights at the border
- By border patrol officers giving notice to owners of suspect shipments
If this bill becomes law, Canada will no longer be a safe haven for counterfeit goods. We’ll keep you posted.
